Adam Weishaupt founded the Illuminati of Bavaria on May 1, 1776 on the principles of his early training as a Jesuit. Originally called the Order of the Perfectibilists. The Illuminati or "enlightened" is a name given to several groups and in more modern contexts the name refers to a purported conspiratorial organization which is alleged to mastermind events and control world affairs through governments and corporations to establish a New World Order.

In this context the Illuminati are usually represented as a modern version or continuation of the Bavarian Illuminati. The Illuminati's members took a vow of secrecy and pledged obedience to their superiors and members were divided into three main classes, each with several degrees, and many Illuminati chapters drew membership from existing Masonic lodges. Many influential intellectuals and progressive politicians counted themselves as members and the order had branches in most European countries with around 2,000 members over the span of ten years.

In 1777 Karl Theodor Became Ruler of Bavaria

He was a proponent of Enlightened Despotism and his government banned all secret societies including the Illuminati and Weishaupt fled but his documents and internal correspondences were seized and published by the government so much of the group's literature was exposed. Another reorganization took place in 1780 after the Lower Saxon noble Adolph Freiherr Knigge joined the Illuminati.

In 1782 he gave a structure similar to the Freemason lodges to the order that had until that point. This new organization allowed the Illuminati to recruit numerous Freemasons and infiltrate entire lodges against the backdrop of a crisis that the higher grades of the German Freemasonry were going through after the collapse of the Order of Strict Observance in 1776. This movement claimed succession from the Knights Templar and Karl Gotthelf von Hund claimed to be in contact with "Unknown Superiors" who had let him in on the deepest secret of Freemasonry.

Is the Illuminati Still Around?

The seed of the Illuminati has surfaced in many forms today, on a Global level and the entire New Age/Secret Society system is rooted in one common foundation. Privately the esoteric high level round tables would have no problem identifying themselves as the Illuminati, but publicly, not so much.

Outside of men like John Todd who in the early to mid 70's gave his personal testimony across the United States of his involvement with the inner workings of the Council of 13, the subject matter of the Illuminati remains silent and categorized as a conspiracy. Still the symbolism of this Enlightenment era of secret Illumination is all around us in Ancient and New Age Religions as well as modern secret societies.

I'll name a few societies of secrets for you and lets see how many you are familiar with: Freemasonry, Skull and Bones, Rosicrucian's, Knights Templar, Bohemian Club, Committee of 300, Council of Nine, JASON Society, Jesuits, Knights of Columbus, Knights of the Garter, Knights of Malta, Shriner's, KKK, Order Of The Golden Dawn, Order of the Rose, Chatham House, Thule Society - the list goes on and on.

Lets not forget the power structures of our world like the United Nations, Marxism, Communism, Fascism, Nazism, the Council on Foreign Relations, the Tri-Lateral Commission, the Bilderbergs, B'nai B'rith. There are many, many other societies of secrets in the world today - some you may have heard of some you may have not - that's why they call them secret.
